Which countries have no compulsory schooling at all? What does it mean to unenroll a child from school in Germany — and what comes after that? Should a child go to school in every country you live in for a few months? Or homeschooling instead — and in which countries is that even allowed?

Lots of questions, few reliable answers. Because most people writing about this have never actually lived it.

Our Path

We lived through this process — not as a thought experiment, but as a family. As parents, we had to ask ourselves a lot of questions, some of them uncomfortable. And we found answers that fit our concept of life. Not the one right solution for everyone — that doesn’t exist. But the right one for us.

The Biggest Challenge? Other People.

What was often more challenging than any paperwork: friends and acquaintances who got involved — and repeatedly thought they knew better what was good for us and our son. Anyone taking this path doesn’t just need information. They also need the calm to stand by their own decision.
